The First Half Is Not the Game: Hiring Calls Made at Halftime
Notre Dame beat Wisconsin 41 to 13 at Lambeau last Saturday. Look at the final score, and you would assume it was comfortable.
It was 13 to 10 at the half; the offense couldn’t stay on the field, and I sat there thinking, “Here we go again,” watching another September loss quietly take the playoff conversation off the table before October even arrived.
Then the second half happened, and it was 28-3.
On Wednesday night, I watched Jadarian Price start for the Super Bowl champion Seahawks and look like he absolutely belonged.
He went 32nd overall, the last man taken in the first round. Two years ago he was our backup, the guy who came in when Jeremiyah Love needed a series off.
What I keep coming back to is how often the early read is simply wrong. The first half is not the game, and the number 2 on your roster is not a watered-down version of the number 1. He’s often somebody else’s first-round pick.
Where I think this bites us in our world is hiring. I watch people write off a candidate in the first 20 minutes of an interview, write off the internal person who’s been sitting behind their star for 2 years, and write off an entire search at week 3 because the first slate didn’t have the answer. Some of those calls are right. A whole lot of them get made at halftime.
