Notre Dame plays Navy tomorrow in Foxborough, and the game on the field is not the part of this rivalry I that is probably the most significant. “Though I do need a bit of a pick me up after our tough loss 2 weeks ago”.
The two schools have met on the football field almost every year since 1927, and there is a reason that streak is significant.
During World War II, Notre Dame was in real financial trouble. The school opened its campus to the Navy as a V-12 officer training site, and the Navy paid enough for the use of those facilities to keep the University afloat.
Notre Dame has never forgotten it. They still describe the annual game as repayment on a debt of honor, and they have committed to keep playing it through 2032.
One side showed up when it was hard, and nearly 100 years later the other side is still honoring the relationship, long after everyone involved in the original deal is gone.
I think that’s pretty cool. That is how I try to run my business, and it is why I keep saying the relationship is much more important than simply closing a deal.
The placement I make this year matters, but the candidate who remembers that I told them the truth when it cost me the deal is the one who calls me in 6 years when they are the hiring manager.
The client that that I advise not to open up a new position because the timing isn’t right for them, or appreciates honest feedback from the market or candidates (especially when it is not positive) are the ones that respect my judgement and truly partner with me to create a collaborative recruiting strategy that will deliver when everything they’ve tried before has not.
Notre Dame is 6-1 and coming off a bye after a tough 4 point loss at BYU; but I like their chances tomorrow. Win or lose though, one of the things I respect a lot about this program is that it still pays a debt it technically settled more than 80 years ago.
Ok, the other thing is I do believe they are a pretty damn good team and despite the loss, I still believe their is a path to the ever elusive Natty this year. I’ve only been waiting since my sophomore year in high school, so I’ve learned to be eternally hopeful.
