Notre Dame at BYU: A Hiring Lesson About Proven Performers

Notre Dame has not beaten a top 10 team on the road since 2012, and Saturday night in Provo it gets another chance.

The Irish are 6-0, ranked No. 2, and have won 16 straight games, every one by double digits.

Only Army has ever gone longer, with 21 from 1944 to 1946. Last Saturday, ND beat Stanford 58-7, with five touchdowns covering at least 30 yards. That is a team playing very well at home. All pretty rosy, but…

Road games against elite opponents have been a different story.

Notre Dame has lost seven straight true road games against top 10 teams, and Marcus Freeman is 0-3 in them. Let’s just say for this diehard ND fan, it’s reason to be a bit nervous.

Marcus knows what Saturday is, and he said so this week: “We want to play against the best, and this is the best.”

Here is where I think this applies to hiring. A candidate who has been a star in one building, with the right team and the right support around them, has proven a lot. What I most want to know is what happened the last time the building changed.

The best people can tell you exactly what they learned when they stepped into a new environment, and they usually welcome the question.

When you hire a proven performer, how do you find out whether they can win in a different building?
