Notre Dame led BYU 24-21 with 9:31 left on Saturday, and it still lost 28-24. The Irish were ranked No. 2 and had won 16 straight games.
Marcus Freeman summed it up afterward: We had them on the ropes, we couldnt find a way to finish.
Believe it or not, the play that decided it was not the last one. Though that certainly didn’t help…
Just before halftime, C.J. Carr fumbled while trying to spike the ball at the BYU 5. In the third quarter, a penalty wiped out a 39-yard JoJo Phillips touchdown that would have made it 28-10. Then Notre Dame took the lead, intercepted Bear Bachmeier, went three-and-out, and watched BYU drive 55 yards for the go-ahead touchdown with 1:47 left.
The Big 12 has since admitted that time remained when Carr’s final pass hit the ground, so yeah, not cool at all!
I also think Notre Dame shouldn’t have needed that last play if they had executed on the plays mentioned above.
They are now 6-1 and somehow only dropped to No. 4 in the AP poll, with a bye week, which I think will be helpful I’m trying to look at the positive and am hoping this was a big wake-up call for the Fighting Irish, which they will need in a couple of weeks when they square off against # 1 Miami. Yes, that Miami, that beat them last year and took their spot in the playoffs -should be interesting, to say the least.
Here is where I think this applies to hiring. In my experience, searches rarely fall apart at the beginning. The sourcing is strong, the candidate is excited, and the client is excited about the candidate. Everything seems to be coming together nicely, until the shoe drops. They fall apart in the final stretch: an offer takes too long, an unexpected counteroffer shows up, or a reference poaches them at the last minute (just saying, it happens).
Everyone celebrates getting into the red zone, but if you don’t finish with a win for your client, then it really doesn’t mean anything.
I have always said 1 of my main responsibilities is to eliminate surprises, and I earnestly try to do that with every search I take on. How do I do it? By strategically planning out the close process with my clients. Even then, things still happen out of left field on occasion that make me shake my bald head in confusion and wonderment. From there, I communicate the facts to the client as best I can, regroup, formulate a plan to prevent it from happening again, and push forward.
