The poll I ran last week came back almost perfectly split, and that surprised me more than any single answer in it.
41% of you said these warnings are mostly hype.
Another 41% of you are worried to some degree, and most of that group did not hedge at all. 25% picked “very worried, this is real.”
The remaining 16% said there is no way for them to judge, which is exactly where I put myself when I wrote the original post.
I expected the hype answer to run away with this one. I have been openly skeptical of most of the AI noise of the last 3 years, and I assumed a community that actually implements this software for a living would be more skeptical than I am, not less. That is not what came back at all.
This is why I keep saying the number itself is the least useful part of the conversation. Almost nobody quoting a 10% figure can show you how they arrived at it, and I include the people at the labs in that.
What I can judge is what is happening in our communities right now. AI agents are being turned loose inside ERP systems that touch cash, revenue recognition and the financial statements, and the reality is that most leaders simply don’t have a clue in terms of what guardrails are in place for their respective firms.
Where I think this actually lands for us has nothing to do with extinction. The control problem showed up in our world a long time ago, and it is the reason I keep saying the experienced human judgment layer around these systems is going to be worth considerably more over the next 5 years, not less.
Somebody has to be accountable for what the agent did at 2am, and it is not going to be the agent.
