Notre Dame has never played a game at Lambeau Field. Sunday night, they will, in a stadium named after one of their very own players.
Curly Lambeau suited up for Knute Rockne in 1918, on Rockne’s very first team. He scored the first touchdown of the Rockne era in Rockne’s first game.
Then he came down with tonsillitis, missed the spring semester, and never went back to South Bend.
He was 21 and worked at the Indian Packing Company in Green Bay when he started a football team there in 1919.
He coached it for 29 seasons and won 6 NFL championships for the Green Bay Packers. He took Rockne’s offense with him too, and ran the Notre Dame Box in Green Bay well into the 1920s.

Did you know that? I grew up 30 minutes from South Bend and am a lifelong ND fan (I was a sophomore in HS the last time they won the Natty; could this be the next year?!), and I’m embarrassed to say this was news to me!
So on Sunday, the Irish walk into a building named for a player they lost, who left behind something nobody planned for, and who went on to build something that outlasted every person in that room. There it is, right there, the business tie-in as promised…..
The football matters too. Notre Dame opens at number 4 and is favored by 20.5, which is a bold number for a program with a real September problem. Marshall in 2022. Northern Illinois in 2024. An 0-2 start last season. Freeman has been repeating “leave no doubt” since fall camp, and you can hear why.
Every company has a Curly Lambeau. Somebody good who left over something small, A bad quarter, a conversation nobody had, a problem that got handled badly, a promotion that was passed over, a small slight- you name it.
They do not disappear. They go somewhere else and build.
