Big week for Anthropic – and a wake up call for anyone paying attention to AI governance!

Big week for Anthropic — and a wake-up call for anyone paying attention to AI governance.

A lot has unfolded in the past few days that’s worth paying attention to if you work in tech, AI, or enterprise software or just don’t like the idea of the gov’t spying on it’s own people.

Last week, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei drew a hard line with the Department of Defense, refusing to allow Claude to be used for mass domestic surveillance or fully autonomous weapons systems.

Due to them simply not buckling under pressure, President Trump directed all federal agencies to immediately cease use of Anthropic products, and Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth moved to designate the company as a national security supply-chain risk!
They basically are blacklisting them from the entire Pentagon contracting ecosystem, including partners, suppliers, and contractors. (Russell Brandom, TechCrunch, Feb. 27)

A private company said “we won’t help surveil American citizens” and the government’s answer was to threaten their entire business.

This isn’t just a story about AI. It’s a story about what happens when the government decides it can weaponize contracting power to override a company’s ethical boundaries without any court orders or really any oversight at all.

OpenAI quickly stepped in with its own Pentagon deal, claiming the same core red lines were preserved, although critics are already questioning the fine print.

Meanwhile, Anthropic’s Claude shot to #1 on the App Store, overtaking ChatGPT, as the public seemed to reward the company for standing firm. (Anthony Ha, TechCrunch, Feb. 28–Mar. 1) Good for you!

This morning, that surge in users may have contributed to a widespread outage affecting Claude.ai and Claude Code. (Ram Iyer, TechCrunch, Mar. 2)

Regardless of where you stand politically, the precedent being set here should concern every business leader, and really anybody that values the concept of freedom. If the government can blacklist a company for refusing to enable blanket surveillance of its own citizens without reason, what’s next?

Who decides where the line is — the companies building these tools, or the agencies demanding access to them?

Unfortunately, these are no longer hypothetical questions.

Would love to hear how others — especially in the hashtagMicrosoftDynamics and hashtagNetSuite space — are thinking about AI governance, vendor risk, and what guardrails actually matter as these tools get deeper into business operations.

We track every new Microsoft Dynamics 365 and NetSuite job posting across North America, every single day, and October gave us the clearest read yet on where this market is actually heading. The short version is that ERP hiring cooled about 11% from September. That headline is true, and it is also misleading. Almost the entire drop sits in the Dynamics implementation tracks, while NetSuite held flat and demand for senior, in-house talent stayed strong. Whether this market feels soft or busy right now depends entirely on which role you are trying to fill. I pulled the full track by track breakdown into this month’s DynamicsFocus Recruiting Report, and it is attached below. If you have a role that has been sitting open since the summer, I would genuinely love to hear what you have tried so far and am more than happy to schedule a 30 minute Teams call to share potential strategies to rectify the situation, no strings attached. #MicrosoftDynamics #D365 #Dynamics365 #NetSuite #ERP #NetSuiteRecruiting #MicrosoftDynamicsRecruiting #TalentMarket #Hiring #AIAgents
