What top AI executives are telling their own children are going to be critical for success in the job markets of the future

A recent Wall Street Journal piece by Lauren Weber asked top AI executives, including Anthropic co-founder Daniela Amodei and Microsoft Chief Scientist Jaime Teevan, what they’re telling their own kids about jobs of the future.
I thought it was kind of interesting that not 1 of them said they should learn to code or master AI tools.

Instead, the consensus was:
✅ Adaptability and critical thinking
✅ Broad, generalist education
✅ Accountability; AI can’t take responsibility, humans must
✅ Deeply human skills: empathy, communication, relationship-building

Daniela Amodei said it best: “What’s not going to be replaceable is how you treat other people, how well you communicate with them, how kind you are.”

I like that. Kind of the old school concept of “what goes around, comes around”.

After 25+ years placing Microsoft Dynamics 365 and NetSuite talent, especially inside industry leading Professional Services Consulting firms & PE and VC-backed companies, I can tell you: the most sought-after ERP professionals right now aren’t just technically sharp.

They also need to be able to do the following very well:
🔹 Earn trust fast in high-pressure environments
🔹 Translate technical realities into board-level language
🔹 Lead through ambiguity and own outcomes and not just deliverables

Technical qualifications get candidates in the door. Human qualities get them the offer and determine whether they succeed.

AI will reshape how ERP professionals work. But the ones who thrive will be those who leverage it then do what AI simply cannot: build trust, exercise judgment, and take accountability.

The future isn’t about competing with AI. It’s about becoming the professional AI makes more valuable.
