Microsoft is adding a staffing timeline to Dynamics 365 Project Operations, with general availability set for October.
It’s called “View current and upcoming staffing in a timeline,” and it has been in public preview since June.
For a Microsoft partner, it answers the question of who is actually free next month.
For a private equity firm that owns partners, it answers the same question across the whole portfolio.
I think both groups should pay attention to this. In a services business, utilization is margin. A consultant on the bench for 3 weeks is cost with no revenue, and a project that can’t start because nobody is free is revenue that slides into next quarter.
For the partner, one screen showing current and upcoming staffing means you see the gap before the customer does. That changes your decision, whether to hire, subcontract, or move someone off another project.
For the investor, the more interesting part is what happens when you can compare. If every services company in a portfolio runs staffing the same way, you can see which ones are carrying bench they can’t afford and which ones are turning down work because they can’t staff it.
That’s the same problem from the other end, and one firm’s idle consultant may be exactly what another firm needs. A timeline will show you the hole six weeks out, but it won’t fill it. If it takes months to find a qualified Dynamics or NetSuite person, you saw the problem early and paid for it anyway.
The firms that get the most from this will pair the visibility with a bench of known people they can call, which is why I keep saying the right people are already in our network, long before they ever answer a posting.
If you own or run a services business in our communities, how are you tracking who is free next month today: a spreadsheet or the system?
